A pair of very different female pop stars dominated the competition so far this year. Ariana Grande earned over 17 million pageviews across her catalog, mostly off the strength of her 2019 album, thank u, next, as well as 2018’s sweetener. Billie Eilish netted almost 13 million from the combined impact of WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? and her still-popular 2017 EP, don’t smile at me. Grande more than doubled the totals of Top 5 heavy hitters like Drake and Eminem, while Eilish handily outpaced them, too.

Neither of the aforementioned rappers have dropped much music as a lead artist this year. Drake put out a pair of singles in June, while Eminem has stuck to features. Both artists cracked the Top 5 anyway off the strength of their 2018 releases combined with their extensive discographies. The late Florida rapper XXXTentacion rounded out the Top 5, as fans continued to flock to Genius to read his lyrics following his 2018 murder.

The lower half of the Top 10 are occupied by rappers with major new releases. Tyler, The Creator earned some of the best press (and first week sales) of his career with IGOR, Logic continued to deliver for his fans with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and Lil Nas X became one of 2019’s biggest breakout stars with the runaway success of “Old Town Road.” New releases from Juice WRLD and French rap duo PNL also landed both artists in the Top 10.

Amongst evergreen performers like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar were a few surprising additions to the Top 20. YNW Melly landed at No. 17 after a breakout start to the year was cut short when he turned himself in on double homicide charges. His hit single, “Murder On My Mind,” has drawn intense and continued interest ever since, even though the lyrics are not a murder confession. Lil Uzi Vert’s lack of a new album hasn’t stopped fans’ enthusiasm for his music, either, with the Philly native raking in over three million pageviews across his catalog. YoungBoy Never Broke Again, dominant on YouTube, rounded out the Top 20.Popular Song Lyrics 2019

Even one of the longest No. 1 runs in Billboard Hot 100 history wasn’t enough for Lil Nas X’s breakout hit, “Old Town Road,” to unseat Ariana Grande for the biggest song of 2019 (so far) on Genius. Grande earned over six million pageviews for her chart-topping track, “7 rings,” which drew plenty of controversy for similarities to rap songs and the singer’s botched tattoo.

Although he couldn’t best her, Lil Nas X still posted impressive numbers for “Old Town Road” (combining pageviews for the original and remix). Logic and Eminem’s much-hyped collaboration, “Homicide,” took a distant third, followed by Billie Eilish’s “bury a friend” and J. Cole’s “MIDDLE CHILD.” The latter song became the highest-charting hit of Cole’s career earlier this year, and offers a preview of several planned projects from the Dreamville leader.

Pop’s leading ladies took up eight total spots on the Top 20 in 2019, with Grande netting five entries and Eilish landing three. Combined with appearances by “Shallow,” “ME!,” and “I Don’t Care,” pop controlled more than 50 percent of the Top 20. This is a higher share than the same time last year, when just five pop songs landed amongst a healthy dose of hip-hop and show tunes.

Of course, rap music is still well represented. Tyler, The Creator, Lil Dicky, Travis Scott, 21 Savage, and YNW Melly each earned a Top Songs entry. The high-profile arrests of 21 and Melly, which seemed to tie into the respective lyrics to “a lot” and “Murder On My Mind,” helped boost these numbers. Meanwhile, the bizarre, TikTok-fueled phenomenon of “Mia Khalifa” helped iLOVEFRiDAY land just inside the Top 20, too. 2019 has seen the popular lip syncing app boost the fortunes of songs like “Old Town Road,” Sueco the Child’s “Fast,” and The BoyBoy West Coast’s “Bottoms Up.”Popular Song Lyrics 2019

Matching their success on the Top Artists and Top Songs charts, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish lapped the competition with their respective albums. Grande’s thank u, next produced five Top 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while Eilish’s WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? earned two. Right on their heels is another major release that dropped just days before the June 30 deadline: 7 by Lil Nas X. The vast majority of that project’s pageviews have come from “Old Town Road,” although “Panini,” “Rodeo,” and “C7osure (You Like)” have also started tallying up substantial views.

Tyler, the Creator’s latest album, IGOR, arrived to widespread critical praise, helping the now-veteran rapper land at No. 4. Although the project wasn’t filled with sly references to his sexuality like 2017’s Flower Boy, its love-lorn lyrics still drew sizable attention.

K-pop boyband BTS came in just behind Tyler at No. 5 with the group’s latest effort, Map of the Soul: Persona, one of two Korean and five non-English projects to crack the Top 20. The boys appeared a few slots above fellow K-poppers BLACKPINK as well as Russian rapper Big Baby Tape, Turkish act Ben Fero, and French duo PNL. Together, these entries show the continued interest in non-English music both internationally and in the US.

Eilish, Khalid, and XXXTentacion each landed a pair of projects in the Top 20, indicating wider popularity beyond their most recent releases. Meanwhile, 2019 breakouts like YNW Melly and Blueface also earned slots, while 2018 MVP Juice WRLD rounded things out.Popular Song Lyrics 2019

Although Grande bested her in other categories, Billie Eilish came out on top so far this year in the lyrics race. The chorus of her hit single, “bury a friend,” landed at No. 1 as fans attempted to decipher the song’s creepy lyrics written from the perspective of a monster under Eilish’s bed. The teen singer earned four slots in the Top 10 Lyrics of 2019, the most of any artist, with “wish you were gay,” “my strange addiction,” and “listen before i go” all drawing interest.

Logic and Eminem’s rapid-fire “Homicide” also earned outsized attention, with fans making it one of the year’s top songs so far and crowning Logic’s first verse as the second-most-popular lyrics of 2019. On the track, Logic references his collaborator Eminem’s classic “My Name Is.”

Although Grande’s highest placement is No. 4, she still earned a healthy three spots on the Top Lyrics chart. Lyrics from “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored” proved to be the most popular, followed by her reference to buying hair on “7 rings.” The latter lyric proved to be controversial, as fans accused her of stealing from Princess Nokia, 2 Chainz, and Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em. Others claimed that the line was a form of cultural appropriation.

The only other artists to land on the Top Lyrics chart are Tyler, the Creator and Taylor Swift. The latter artist’s “ME!” proved to be somewhat of a commercial disappointment, but still earned over one million pageviews. Meanwhile, the former’s “Earfquake” featuring Playboi Carti turned out to be a surprise hit, peaking at No. 13 on the Hot 100 chart.Popular Song Lyrics 2019
